Death In Osceola #3
On 7 September 1895, the Copper Country experienced its worst mining accident ever, resulting in the loss of 30 lives and threatening the future of mining operations of the Osceola Mining Company. That morning, with a full day shift of over 200 workers underground, a fire was discovered in the No. 3 Shaft of the Osceola Mine in Calumet. This is the story of what happened to the miners and the families they left behind.

The FAMILIES LEFT BEHIND The Italian Hall Tragedy 1913
The Houghton Keweenaw Genealogical Society is ending 2013 with a bang! We have just completed a 110 page book titled “Families Left Behind.” Many of our members contributed untold hours researching and writing “memorials” of the families of the people who died at the Italian Hall tragedy on 24 December 1913. There were fifty different families that lost one or more family members. The majority of deaths were children. We now have this publication available for purchase. The profits from this endeavor will be donated to the Keweenaw National Historical Park to help with the preservation and interpretation at the Italian Hall site.
